Niles Duncan has been rebuilding pianos since the early 1980's while simultaneously pursuing a career in software development. In June 1996 he left the software industry and is now totally involved with pianos. He studied piano technology in the late '70's and early 80's with the Los Angeles technician and composer Leon Levitch who at that time was teaching piano technology through UCLA Extension. He is a classical pianist and has also been involved in historical performance on the fortepiano.
Mark Mandell has been a piano technician for twenty-five years. He blames an accordian he had as a child for his fascination with the mechanics of musical instruments; in his own words: "I would have to blame my beloved accordian that I grew up with as the reason for my eventually becoming a piano technician. Besides playing it, I was fascinated by taking the thing apart and examining the insides after my teacher showed me how." Mark also studied piano technology with Leon Levitch during the 1970's, leading to a career as a technician. He is also an avid jazz pianist.
